CryoPen treatment guide

CryoPen for skin tags: what to expect on the day

Skin tags are harmless but often unwanted. If you've been considering removal, CryoPen offers a quick, precise alternative to home kits and string-tying methods. Here's exactly what happens during treatment, how the area heals, and when you'll be done.

The short version

CryoPen uses nitrous oxide at -89°C to freeze skin tags precisely, destroying the lesion without harming healthy tissue. The treatment takes seconds per tag. You'll feel a brief cold sting. The tag will scab over within days and detach within 7 to 14 days. Most require one session only. Professional cryotherapy is colder and more precise than over-the-counter kits, and avoids the infection and scarring risks of string-tying or ligation.

How CryoPen works: precision freezing

A skin tag is harmless overgrowth of skin, often appearing on the neck, under the arms, or on the chest. The CryoPen delivers nitrous oxide under high pressure to a very small area. Within seconds, the extreme cold freezes the water inside the cells of the lesion. As those cells freeze, ice crystals form and expand, rupturing the cell membrane. The targeted tissue dies, while the surrounding healthy skin remains untouched.

The precision matters. Because the CryoPen can be applied with millimetre accuracy, only the tag itself is destroyed. There is little or no damage to the skin around it. This is why professional treatment differs sharply from home freezing kits, which contain much weaker freezing agents and often require repeated applications because they cannot deliver such precise, controlled cold.

What the appointment feels like

When you attend your appointment, I will assess the skin tag and confirm it is safe to treat. During the procedure itself, the CryoPen is held against the lesion for just a few seconds per tag. You will feel a brief cold sensation, often described as a sting or mild burn. It lasts only as long as the application (seconds), and the sensation fades immediately once the CryoPen is removed.

Many patients find the sensation well tolerated and do not need numbing. If you are particularly sensitive or anxious, a topical anaesthetic can be applied beforehand, though most find it unnecessary. There are no needles, no incisions, and no stitches.

Healing timeline: days 1 to 14

The healing process is straightforward and requires minimal aftercare.

  • · Days 1 to 3: The treated area may redden slightly. A small blister or crust may form as the tissue begins to die.
  • · Days 4 to 7: The area scabs over, usually becoming darker or more pronounced. This is normal and a sign that the lesion is detaching.
  • · Days 7 to 14: The scab dries and falls away, revealing fresh, healthy skin underneath. The tag itself will have detached completely.
  • · Beyond day 14: The area fades to normal skin. No scar or mark remains in the vast majority of cases.

Keep the area clean and dry. Avoid picking at the scab, as this can increase infection risk and slow healing. Most people can return to normal activities immediately; there is no downtime in the way there is with injections or incisional procedures.

Will one session be enough?

In most cases, yes. Professional cryotherapy achieves complete removal in a single session for the majority of skin tags. If a tag does not detach fully or begins to regrow, a second treatment can be done 4 to 6 weeks after the first. In clinical practice, a repeat is occasional rather than routine. Clinical trial data shows that about half of treated tags clear after one application, with higher overall clearance rates after repeated treatments if needed.

The advantage of professional CryoPen is that the cold is intense and the delivery precise enough that one well-placed treatment usually achieves the result. This is why it outperforms home freezing kits, which are typically less effective and more likely to require multiple applications.

CryoPen versus home kits and string-tying

Over-the-counter freezing kits contain significantly weaker freezing agents than professional medical devices. They cannot deliver the same temperature or precision, so they often leave the base of the tag intact and require multiple applications. Home kits are also less reliable, with incomplete removal leading to frustration and wasted time.

String-tying (ligation) is a method sometimes attempted at home: a piece of string is tied tightly around the base of the tag to cut off its blood supply. This carries real risks. Infection is common, because the string is sterile neither at application nor during wear. Bleeding can occur if the string is pulled too tight. Scarring is possible, especially if the tag becomes inflamed or infected. The experience is also painful, as a constant pressure around a lesion is uncomfortable for days.

Professional CryoPen avoids all these hazards. There is no infection risk because nothing is left in place; the tissue is simply destroyed and shed naturally. There is no bleeding. Scarring is very rare. The experience is brief and well tolerated. In my clinic, I see the occasional patient who has tried home methods first and ended up with inflammation or incomplete removal. Professional treatment is the safer, more reliable option.

A short safety note

Before any CryoPen treatment, a proper assessment is essential. Not all skin lesions are skin tags, and some growths require dermatological review or biopsy before treatment. Pigmented lesions, in particular, should be checked to ensure they are benign. If you have any doubt about a lesion, or if it has changed in appearance, size, or colour, a dermatological assessment is the right first step.

Patients with a history of keloid scarring or certain skin conditions may be less suitable for cryotherapy. During your consultation, I will discuss your full history and confirm that CryoPen is the right choice for you.

What to do now

If you have one or more skin tags you'd like removed, book a free consultation. I'll examine the lesions, confirm they are suitable for treatment, and explain what to expect on the day. CryoPen is quick, safe, and effective, and it costs less than many home methods when you account for their poor results. There is no reason to live with unwanted skin tags when a professional solution exists.

How long does it take for a skin tag to fall off after CryoPen?

The tag will scab over within days and detach completely within 7 to 14 days. The scab dries and falls away, revealing fresh skin underneath, with no scar or mark remaining in the vast majority of cases.

Do I need multiple CryoPen treatments for skin tags?

Most skin tags are completely removed in a single session. If a tag does not detach fully or begins to regrow, a second treatment can be done 4 to 6 weeks after the first, though a repeat is occasional rather than routine.
